Deborah Allen remembers "the Jim Reeves Duets"
"A prominent Nashville song plugger threw a writers' party that I was invited to, and as the night wore on, the guitar started making its rounds. I sang "Goodbye Love" and "Dirty Old Man" and thought nothing of it...except how much fun it was to be among such talented friends! The next morning, Bud Logan, who was once Jim Reeves' bass player had his engineer, Les Ladd, call me and tell me about the idea he had to overdub someone's voice on the Jim Reeves original tracks, turning them into duets. Bud had heard me sing at the party the night before, and thought my voice would be perfect..."
"My favorite memory during the making of the duets was on the song 'When Two Worlds Collide.' I will never forget it...I was standing in the middle of the room at Woodland Studios. It was pitch black except for the light over the lyrics. I was singing along with Jim Reeves on the line 'That's what happens when two worlds collide'...when I felt his spirit enter the room. It was like he was there with me...a very powerful and eerie feeling...the human and the spirit world were literally colliding."
Nobody's Fool
..."One of my favorite songs off of the 'Trouble In Paradise' album. It was poignant...it had a groove. I remember being proud to be a part of it as a writer."
You (Make Me Wonder Why)
..."This was the first song I ever co-wrote with Rafe Van Hoy...the beginning of a very fruitful creative relationship."
You Look Like The One I Love
..."A fun uptempo song... happy and feel good! No, It's not a Cyclops tribute!"
Baby I Lied
..."was a song that changed my life, and gave me an even clearer glimpse of the dream in my heart. I wrote it with Rafe and Rory Bourke... we had gotten together to hopefully write a career song for me. We were still in that "polite" co-writing stage, so Rory suggested an idea, prefacing it by saying, 'Now, if you don't like this idea, don't worry-my feelings won't be hurt.' We apparently ddin't respond much, so he said, "Hey, did I say I wouldn't be hurt... well, I lied!' Our eyes lit up! I said... "Hey, that's it!' The song was finished in no time...the rest is history."
I've Been Wrong Before
..."The follow-up to 'Baby I Lied'. RCA's effort to make sure my pop success hadn't offended country radio! At the time, I loved the song and didn't understand the need to categorize my music...I was unsophisticated about formats and had no idea anyone could ever get offended by music!"
I Hurt For You
..."I'll never forget, my sister, Judy, was in the hospital for an operation. I was there to be with her when they brought her back from the recovery room...still slightly sedated, and rolled her past me into her room. I got weak feeling and just ached all over and I thought... 'I Hurt For You!' It was pure and sincere thought, but as soon as I had it, it was like a light bulb came on and a bell went "ding!" I loved the idea! I knew it was a hit, but I felt so guilty for having the thoguht. As it turned out, Judy was actually honored to have been my inspiration...I guess that's what sisters are for."
Heartache And A Half
..."I wrote this with my pal from Muscle Shoals, Eddie Struzick of "Sharing The Night Together" fame, and Rafe. We had all been in L.A. pitching some songs to Bonnie Raitt when we started it...finished it in Nashville. We used to take 'bowling breaks' to let our minds think. Nothing like rolling a few balls to help inspiration strike... we had ideas to spare... it was a three way split. Pun intended!"
Don't Worry 'Bout Me Baby
..."is a song I wrote with Bruce Chanel and Kieran Kane while waiting my turn to sing at a demo session one day ...we finished it late ron my front porch. I believeed in this song so much that one afternoon the three of us piled in a car with Don Gant and decided to "storm" Janie Fricke's session! Jim Ed Normal was producing and we said 'Jim Ed, this song is a hit!' He listened, and wound up cutting it on Janie that day! It was her first #1 song as an artist and my first #1 as a writer..."
